Don Metz, after being coerced into having a pedicure, enjoyed it so much that he decided to have it personalized. One toenail has a stylized bicycle on it – the other sports the letters RAAM.

Around 8:15 p.m. tonight, Dur Higgins rolled up to a parking lot in Mercersburg, PA, marking the end of a long day of climbing through the Appalachians and his (and Don Metz’s) last leg of racing for RAAM 2012.  As soon as Dur’s front wheel overlapped the rear wheel of Dave Burnett’s bike, Dave was off, pedaling his TT bike like a fiend toward the finish line in Annapolis.  The Racer Vehicle pulled out of the lot shortly afterward to shuttle Michael Patterson to a forward position, from which he and Dave would begin leap-frogging through their last shift of this epic race.

The duo passed through Time Station 50 at Rouzerville, PA about an hour later.  Though the long day in the mountains dragged the team’s average cumulative speed down, as of this writing (10:30 p.m.), it’s still above 19 mph!

RAAM is projecting that all four riders of the United 4 Health Racing team will cross the finish line at City Dock in Annapolis at 4:13 AM tomorrow, Saturday, June 23.  Please come join us, if you can, to give a rousing welcome to this remarkable team of athletes.

Michael and Dave, having taken us from Ohio to West Virginia will be here in the next 30 minutes. Don and Dur are fueling up for their West Virginia racing opportunities.

The end is in sight and so far the racers have exceeded their goals. As of Time Station #45, the average speed is 19.38 mph.
